David's AW News: Spring is in the Air
Greetings from Bali,
Last week I was telling you How Strangely Peaceful it was in
Bali... and then abruptly not.. If you
missed it you can catch up here..
Well the clocks went back this weekend.. SPRING is in the
air.. it's time to get your bunny & bounce on!
Bondhan and I bounced over to the main wholesale market in
Denpasar Bali. See below.. as usual spilling the beans on where to go if you
fancy importing yourself from Bali.. this is a good starting point.
Meanwhile this week I’ve found myself deep in the world of
leases… but in two very different worlds.
Back in the UK, we’re in the middle of a rent review on our
main warehouse—about 9,000 square metres of it. It’s all surveyors, technical
arguments, comparables, yield calculations… the kind of conversations that can
go round in circles for weeks or months..
Meanwhile here in Bali, we needed to renew our 2,000 square
metre warehouse. A completely different experience. You won't believe the cost
comparison see below!
Last I sat down with the father and son who own the
property. We had a chat, a coffee, a bit of back and forth… and agreed to
extend for another five years. Price-wise, it’s kind of understood what the
market rate is—and to me, it felt more than fair.
A few days later we met the notary. She wrote everything up,
we all pressed our fingerprints onto the agreement, took a few photos… and that
was that.
Out of curiosity, I worked it out:
UK = about £110 per square metre per year (all in)
Bali = about £2 per square metre per year (signed and
sealed)
It does make you pause for thought. And in Bali, folk are
actually complaining about increasing property costs.
Alongside that, Bondhan and I have been out on the road
again—visiting suppliers, looking for those next products that will really work
for you.
We’ve just come back from Kumbasari Market in Denpasar. If
you’ve ever thought about importing from Bali, this is where it often begins.
For decades, Kumbasari has been the wholesale heartbeat of the island—small
traders, artisans, middlemen, all under one roof, supplying shops across
Indonesia and far beyond.
It’s not glamorous. It’s hot, humid, and the aisles are
narrow and busy—but it’s full of energy and ideas.
Interestingly, it was also one of the first places COVID
really hit in Bali. Tomas and I were walking those same tight corridors the day
before everything changed back in early 2020… it felt very different this time,
but also strangely reassuring to see it fully alive again.
Next stop for us is Ubud—always a good place to find
something a little bit different, a bit more creative.
And I suppose that’s the thread running through this week…
Two warehouses, two completely different worlds.
One built on contracts and calculations… the other on
relationships and trust.
Both are important in their own way.
But at the end of it all, it still comes down to the same
thing—people.
We have a new Youtube videos for you. It is me is walking on the beach near our
office and doing my best to persuade you that being a Digital Nomad or
Dropshipper is NOT easy.. with the advent of AI you don't need intelligence to
succeed.. now to be competitive you need 6 personality traits.. Check them out
here.
Take care (as they say here, Hati-Hati)
More news next week and from somewhere NEW.. (it's time to move on)..
David
