Update.. Yes! On the verge of viral...

Greetings from a coffee shop in Bali.

Thank you so much to those of you who have supported the change.org petition to ask for fair tax on Temu and the like.

I was so angry when I discovered that Temu alone sent up to 1500 cargo planes to the UK each month. and gosh..many more to the rest of Europe. That's 100 TIMES the carbon footprint of sending by sea container.. and it's mostly trashy stuff - but still sales that could have been spent in YOUR gift shop. And while you pay taxes in the UK or Europe on profits and imported goods have duty added.. Temu flies its 777s through a massive loophole..exploiting the "de minimis loophole" to totally evade duty and import taxes.

So... It was slow at first with only a few people signing.. but yesterday almost 1000 signatures came.. if we can keep that up it will be awesome and stand a real chance of some media attention.. and just maybe this government will do something and tax the untaxed who are exploiting you.

Meanwhile don't despair..

There is a way to mitigate the Temu hollowing out of trade.. and that's to focus on things front and centre in your stores and online that Temu cannot compete on..

Number one is quality premium or designer branded products. Because let's face it people open the Temu app for bargains.. as one lady in the comments said..who buys essential oils from there..

Temu can't do artisan products well.. Indian, Indonesian and Nepali you can find some but my research is they can't do the crazy prices. Dare I say.. Ancient Wisdom is your best wholesaler for quality eco-friendly gifts.. people still care that products are sourced responsibly - and that type of customer is who you should be catering for. Temu cannot claim any eco credentials at all.

Don't get me wrong I'm not decrying China products in general..just that sources are good and quality meets EU/UK standards and producers are ethical. At AW we have our own office and warehouse in China and carefully vet every (mostly family) businesses we trade with.   Very different to the aggressively sourced Temu products I'm told are bankrupting factories and ruining lives. Temu is not even any good for China.

And at the end of the day let's face it, what good son or daughter is buying Mother's Day gifts on Temu? ..   only the cheapskate.. and for goodness sake you don't need those customers.

David's AW News: Behind the scenes / SOL

Greetings again from the AW Warehouse in Bali. Ringo and his team are working so well, they are crushing it like never before (as Pres Trump would say).. another container shipped every week almost. One just despatched to Slovakia, and in a couple of days another to the UK. A container holds about 69 cubic, and everyday the team tot up how much cubic they have packed into cartons ready to despatch. Ringo can tell me exactly how many cubic we have packed for UK, Spain or Slovakia at the end of every day. When we get to about 60 cubic meters he starts asking EU offices to book a container. We have two young girls in the "accounts" department who not only keep track of the money but chase up artisans reminding them to get orders finished and delivered to the warehouse. They also organise the barcodes and hangtags providing everyday what the packing team needs.  Nuru, Ari are AW heroes of the week. Greetings from the Island of the Gods. It's not a good time to be a tourist in Bali.. it's raining everyday and sometimes huge electric storms with crackling thunder so loud the windows shake. It was Chinese New Year this week, and the locals like to celebrate this, as they do across all of SouthEast Asia, with fireworks and dancing dragons. But the stormy weather put a bit of a dampener on it.. at least three locals told me that wet weather at Chinese New Year is normal, every year like this.. I said how can that be? Because CNY changes date quite a lot can be upto 14 days different.   This year is very early. I'm reliably informed (by several locals) that the more it rains in CNY, the better and more prosperous the coming year will be. I was in central Denpasar with Ringo yesterday and the whole town around the market area was decorated with red lanterns..
